Free and Fun Activities Unique to San Francisco, from a Local
San Francisco has no shortage of things to do, but the best part is that you donโt always have to spend much to enjoy the city. From outdoor movie nights to free concerts and hidden garden entrances, thereโs something for every mood and budget. Whether youโre a local looking to switch up your weekend plans or a visitor wanting to experience SF like a local, these free (or nearly free) activities are some of the best ways to enjoy San Francisco without breaking the bank.
Sundown Cinema: Movie Night in the Park
During summer months, parks like Dolores or Union Square host outdoor movie nights from Sundown Cinema. You can pack your own blanket, snacks, and drinks while watching classic films outside with locals Bring a blanket, some snacks, and enjoy classic films outside with a crowd of locals. It’s entirely free; no need to RSVP unless you want a front row spot.
Farmerโs Markets (Fort Mason, Ferry Building)
SF has many farmer’s markets throughout the week that run year round, but the arguably two best ones in the city are the Ferry Building and the Fort Mason Farmer’s Market.
The Ferry Building Farmers Market is every Saturday morning, which has a range of artisan products and fresh produce. If it’s a nice day, you can also grab oysters along the water at the Ferry Building. The Fort Mason market is every Sunday morning, which also has a great selection of local farms and also a large variety of food trucks if you’re looking to grab coffee and breakfast while shopping.
Beach Day & Bonfire
Head out to Ocean Beach or Baker Beach for a chill day by the water. From March through October, Ocean Beach also allows bonfires in designated fire pits. These are all free and on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you have access to a car, I highly recommend going up to Stinson Beach for a Marin Beach Day as well! It’s a very cute small beach down, great beach, and you can get hook fish in Mill Valley.
Bar Trivia Nights
SF has a great trivia culture throughout the city. Depending on the bar, you can typically find Trivia at bars Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. Trivia itself is usually free, although it’s nice to buy a beer (~$8) while playing to support the business. Below are some of my favorite trivia spots in the city:
- The Bitter End, Tuesday at 9pm
- Danny Coyle, Wednesday at 8pm
- Zekiโs Bar, Wednesday at 8pm
- Detour SF, Thursday at 7:30pm
- The Bitter End, Thursday at 7:30pm
Giantโs Game ($5 Nosebleed Tickets)
Catch the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park with upper-deck tickets that often go for $5โ$10. Even from the top rows, youโll get amazing water views and the stadium experience or you can move to the bleacher part of the Stadium (to the left of the Oracle Park sign) which is open seating.
North Beach Neighborhood Festivals
North Beach comes alive with neighborhood festivals throughout the year, like the North Beach Festival and Italian Heritage Parade. Expect live music, street food, and a buzzing local crowd. There is typically at least one a month – most recently there being a coffee & pastry festival on Grant St.
These are some of the main events in North Beach throughout the year, which is in no way an exhaustive list:
- North Beach Festival (June)
- North Beach Coffee and Pastry Festival (September)
- Italian Heritage Parade (October)
- Halloween Night Market (October)
- Holiday Night Market (December)
Walk Through Golden Gate Park
Spanning more than 1,000 acres, Golden Gate Park is perfect for walking, biking, or just people-watching. I personally love walking from JFK Road, past the ferris wheel, over to the lake. Or sitting by the conservatory of flowers for a picnic. There are sometimes even free salsa classes outside over here on the weekend mornings.
Craft Fairs
Pop-up craft fairs and events like the Renegade Craft Fair at Fort Mason showcase local artisans, jewelry makers, and designers. Theyโre free to attend and great for browsing one-of-a-kind pieces! Be sure to keep out for other fairs like the Union St Festival which takes place every June.
Hiking (in Marin, Lands End)
San Francisco is one of the best cities for hiking – make sure to take advantage of it. In the city itself, trails like Lands End have stunning views of the Golden Gate. I also recommend crossing the bridge into Marin for some of the best hiking in Northern California like Mount Tam, Marin Coastal Trail, and Muir Woods.
Free Concerts & Festivals (Hardly Strictly, Stern Grove)
San Francisco does a phenomenal job at having free music events throughout the year. In the summer, Stern Grove offers free concerts in the park which you can get via raffle. In October, Hardly Strictly is an entirely free bluegrass festival in Golden Gate park that attracts tens of thousands of visitors, in a set up very similar to Outside Lands.
Downtown First Thursdays
Every first Thursday of a new month, Downtown SF throws a massive block party that runs through SoMa. The block party typically draws in tens of thousands of people, with free shows from artists like Snakehips. There’s food, drinks, vendors, and live music making it a really great free activity for post-work at the start of the month.
Picnic in Mission Dolores or Alamo Square Park
Dolores Park is famous for its sunny hillside views and lively weekend scene, while Alamo Square pairs skyline views with the iconic Painted Ladies. Both are perfect for spreading out a blanket and enjoying a picnic.
Free Museum & Garden Entrance Days
Take advantage of free admission days at top museums like SFMOMA, the de Young, and the Asian Art Museum. SF residents also get daily free entry at the Botanical Garden and certain hours at the Japanese Tea Garden.
Off the Grid Food Truck Markets
Off the Grid hosts food truck gatherings with rotating vendors, live music, and community vibes. Itโs free to enterโjust pay for food and drinks if you want to indulge.
Walk the Golden Gate Bridge
One of the most iconic experiences in San Francisco is completely free: walking across the Golden Gate Bridge. The 1.7-mile span offers great views of the Bay, Marin Headlands, and city skyline.

San Francisco proves you donโt need to spend much to enjoy everything the city has to offer. From free concerts and outdoor movies to garden strolls and neighborhood festivals, thereโs always something happening that captures SFโs energy. Whether youโre a local or just visiting, these experiences show the city at its most authentic for free or close to it.
